Former Seevic student Bethany Wheeler could be on her way to team GB.
Bethany, who studied A-Level Biology, Mathematics and Physical Education, has been on a journey ever since September 2014 where she was introduced to Wheelchair Basketball whilst at Seevic College.
This was a chance for Bethany to continue with her passion for sport regardless of her disability. The keen basketball player has a largely unknown condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type 3 and said: “Wheelchair basketball has given me a chance that I never thought possible, to pursue a career in sport.”
The College in Runnymede Chase, Benfleet, introduced the youngster to this sport as part of a Christmas charity week. From there Bethany got talking to the coaches who said that she had the potential to play at a very high level.
Bethany started the college as part of the Seevic Storm basketball team and was on the AASE programme. She is now focusing on a much bigger dream of making it to the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.
The shooting guard or forward player said: “The college were very supportive of the changes I was going through, it was a hard time but they ensured I was given similar opportunities.
“I cannot thank Seevic enough for setting up the Wheelchair Basketball sessions. Sport has always been a major part of my life and the realisation that I would not be able to take place any more was hard but Wheelchair Basketball changed this and I could continue with my dream.”
Currently playing for London Titan’s Bethany has been accepted onto the GB Under 25 programme and has been selected to represent the East team in the All-Star Squad on Saturday 25 February.
Although Bethany has the talent there is one barrier standing in her way. She needs a new wheelchair. She said: “The major factor that is currently restricting my progress is the chair.
“I currently borrow a club level chair which is not suitable for my disability and limits my playing ability.”
Bethany is currently fundraising for a new chair which will help her continue playing basketball at the highest level.
