Award winning author inspires the next generation

Sara Grant, author and editor, visited Seevic College in Benfleet recently to speak to our Level 3 BTEC Creative Media Production students.
The renowned author met with the media students in preparation for their assignment on the commissioning process for writers and writing a pitch for a TV script.
Sara, who has also recently won the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Crystal Kite Award for Europe for her first young adult novel, Dark Parties, spoke to the students about what happens in the commissioning process, giving examples from her own experiences.
She then asked the students to do an ‘elevator pitch’ of their own TV scripts, working with them individually to hone their pitches to an industry standard. It was a great experience for the students, as part of their current assignment they are required to write a pitch for TV script. It resulted in pitches ranging from ‘Sherlock meets Saw’ to ‘the only thing an undercover police officer was unprepared for was caring too much’.
Sara said “The students are working on some great projects. It’s exciting to hear what the new generation want to bring to the market. I want to be able to say I heard that pitch in 2017!”
Amy Benstead, 17 from Laindon, said “This session has been really interesting. Sara helped us understand how to describe an idea rather than outline it.”
Damien Carter, 18 from Southend, added: “It’s been enlightening, we learnt lots of things including how to organise a story and how in-depth character profiles need to be”.
