Tuesday, 29 September 2015
Seevic College is working in partnership with a Canvey Island pet store to offer its students experience of working with a wide range of animals, from birds and parrots to snakes and tarantulas.
The collaboration with Brown’s Pet Range in Oak Road enables students to widen their knowledge and experience, as well as receiving discounts on resources to help improve the habitat of the animals at the college. Students from the college are completing general work experience on a regular basis learning new skills such as: how to clean the animal’s habitat, the different habitats that species live in and how to handle the animals correctly without hurting them or causing pain.
Current student Grace Harvey, 18, from Rayleigh is studying BTEC Level 2 Animal Care at Seevic College. Grace, who wants to work for the RSPCA, said: “through being able to visit Brown’s it ensures I have a wide range of experience with animals preparing me for my future career.”
Sales Assistant Ben Brown has been helping students with the handling, cleaning and feeding of the animals since the start of the term. He said: “Providing students with the opportunity to visit the store it helps us to manage our work load as well as allowing the students to learn new skills which are unable to be taught in the class room”
He added: “Students are also gaining exposure to animals which they would not normally have contact with throughout a college course.”Lorna Bartlett, Teacher of the BTEC Level 2 Animal Care course, said: “The partnership enables students to gain experience with animals but also sees them learn employability skills such as customer service, giving them a huge advantage when they enter the workplace.”
The College’s first Open Evening of 2015-16 will take place on Tuesday 6 October, 6-9pm.Visitors who pre-register at www.seevic-college.ac.uk will be entered in to a competition to win a number of prizes, including tickets to V Festival 2016. `
