Sarah Fogarty, General Manager at Carers Choices, has employed two Apprentices through Seevic College at their Day Centre for Adults with Disabilities.
How did you get involved in working with Seevic?
We have students from the Supported Internship programme who volunteer within our organisation and I was approached a few years ago by Seevic College to see if one of these students could do an Apprenticeship in our Day Centre for Adults with Disabilities.
Why did you decide to hire an Apprentice through Seevic?
I have built up a really good relationship with many of the Tutors from the College who really understand what we do and what qualities I am looking for in an Apprentice.

What does your Apprentice do on a daily basis?
Our Apprentice works alongside my regular staff doing activities, taking my clients on outings, helping them to eat their lunch and performing personal care tasks. Our Apprentice this year is a young man, which has been great for my male clients. He has given us something new to the mix.
How do the rest of your colleagues work alongside the Apprentice?
They really support him, correct him and show him a better way if he goes wrong. They're keen to share their experience and knowledge with him.
In what ways are you supported by the College with hiring an Apprentice?
When our Apprentice started, I was given all the contact details of who I should call should I have any queries or concerns. Thankfully, I have had none, so I have not needed any support from the College this year.
Why would you recommend hiring an Apprentice to other businesses?
Having an Apprentice means that I can teach them everything they need to know whilst I am paying them a reduced wage. It also means that I have extra staff so that I send my regular staff on more training courses and always have an extra member of staff if anyone else is off sick or on holiday.
This is my second Apprentice - the first I was able to offer a full-time position to at the end of the Apprenticeship.
What advice would you give to any other businesses looking to hire an Apprentice through Seevic?
Do it!! There’s very little paperwork!!
My experience of Apprentices is that they are not doing the Apprenticeship for the money, they are doing it because they are genuinely interested in this field of work.
