Budding bakers are showing off their skills at Seevic College.
This February half term, Catering Manager Justin Arnold and Head Chef Becca Blythe have been hosting a series of Bake Off Challenges where people from the local community have the chance to compete to be named best baker.
Everyone who attended the event at the college in Runnymede Chase, Benfleet, had the chance to create a variety of sweet treats including raspberry heart shaped cupcakes with vanilla butter cream, pink meringue rosettes with dark chocolate ganaché, a giant M&M cookie and pizza where they add their own toppings and eat for lunch.
The week consisted of around 80 people coming together in the local community for a lovely day of baking.
At the end of the day Chef Justin picks his best baker where the children are rewarded with a certificate and a goodie bag for their excellent work.
Isabella Taylor who was selected as one of the best bakers throughout the week said: “I had a really fun day and was happy and excited to be the best baker. All the food we made was really yummy”
Chef Justin said: “It is always great to see so many people come together from the local community. The majority come in with little cooking experience and it is rewarding to see them leave having baked wonderful goods.
“We wanted to bring local families into the college and give them the chance to cook together, and promote the Community Learning experience, and we’ve been very successful in this respect. We’ve had parents and carers in with their kids, but we’ve also had grandparents, aunties and uncles coming in too.
“At the end of the day there are smiles all round and the majority can’t wait to come back to see what else they are capable off.”
The Bake-Off Challenge takes place throughout half terms at the College and up to 100 people a week can attend. All competitors in the challenge receive a certificate for their hard work and there is also a prize for Chef Justin’s chosen Best Baker.
