Danny Cleare, Director of Rugby at Seevic College has been named Coach of the Year in the Echo Sport Awards of 2015.
Cleare guided the Rugby team to the final of the NatWest National Schools Cup giving the boys a once in a life time opportunity to play at Twickenham.
Danny was presented with the prize at a surprise presentation in front of hundreds of students at the College where he said: “It’s a massive shock for me to have won”
“I didn’t event expect to be nominated in the first place but it is even more of a surprise that I have actually wont it.
“It’s a good feeling but it’s not just about me – I have a great coaching team around me and the boys are also a massive reason why I’ve wont this award.”
Going to Twickenham will be an unforgettable experience for both Danny and the rugby team and the team have only improved since.
In order to get to the finals the Seevic team had to go head to head with players who had been a team since the age of 11 and to beat them was a fantastic achievement.
The echo panels said: “The cup run was not just a highlight of 2015; it was right up there with the best sporting achievements in our area from the last decade.”
The numbers for the Rugby team are increasing dramatically thanks to Danny’s hard work with the students. “The programme is only getting bigger and better,” said Cleare
Danny added: “It will be hard to match what we did last year but this time we are going to smash it and win.
“That’s the ambition and everyone is working extremely hard to try and make this happen.”
The experience really benefited our players and gave them an insight into what it would feel like to play in such a big stadium. Cleare said: “It was something really special and some of the players the lads were up against are now playing in the Premiership.”
