Seevic College celebrates Eastern region championship victories in rugby and netball

151117 Rugby And Netball Championship VictoriesSeevic College Men’s Rugby 7s and Girl’s Netball teams are both celebrating after winning their respective AoC Sport East Region Championships.

 Both teams will now go head to head with the best Colleges in England at the AoC Sport National Finals to be held in Tyne & Wear on 16-17 April 2016.

 The Men’s Rugby 7s team overcame Hills Road College, from Cambridge, 38-7 in the final held at Shelford Rugby Club in Cambridgeshire on Wednesday 11 November.

 Winger Amos Filson, who also played in the College’s NatWest Schools Cup Final at Twickenham earlier this year, was the leading scorer with 11 tries in the competition.

 Seevic defeated West Suffolk College 33-5, Palmers College 51-0, Easton & Otley College 45-0 and Chelmsford College 56-0 in the group stages.

 They then overcame Peterborough College 46-7 in the last four of the tournament before being crowned Eastern Region champions with victory over Hills Road.

 Head Coach Danny Cleare said: “The tournament was a fantastic day for us. The boys were very professional and completely blew the opposition away with fast, aggressive rugby.”

 The Girl’s Netball team made it a double final victory for Seevic over Hills Road at Cambridge Regional College.

 Goal-shooter Amy Rawlings was the stand out performer, holding her nerve to shoot Seevic to a nail biting 10-8 final victory after extra-time on Wednesday 11 November.

 Seevic defeated Palmers College 17-0, East Norfolk College 20-0, Long Road College 15-5 and hosts Cambridge Regional College 26-0 in the group stages of the competition.

 They then triumphed 21-3 against Suffolk New College before beyond pushed all the way in the dramatic final against Hills Road.

 Head Coach Jadie Kent said: “The girls’ played really well throughout the day. The toughest match proved to be the final, but they held their nerve for a deserved victory. I am incredibly proud of the girls for making the national finals.”

2016 will be the second year in a row that Seevic’s Men’s Rugby 7s and Girl’s Netball teams have made it to the AoC Sport National Finals. In 2015 both teams finished fifth out of 10 teams.

 Seevic will also be represented at the AoC Sport National Finals by three students in cross country and one student in men’s golf.

 Head of Competitive Sport Craig Davidson said: “It’s been another great couple of weeks for Seevic Sport, and the College will be among the most represented colleges in England at the National Championships for the second year in a row. This is a testament to our dedication to provide the best sporting experiences for our students.”
