Seevic College student Maxim wins uni tuition fees for first year

Seevic College student Maxim Sedlacek is looking forward to a stress-free first year at university after the College paid his tuition fees.
18-year-old former Belfairs Academy student Maxim, who lives in Chalkwell, won a scheme launched by the College in September 2013 for one A-Level student to win up to £9,000 in university tuition fees.
Students had to achieve 100% attendance, complete all work on time and participate fully in extracurricular activities.
Thirty students were eligible at the end of the academic year, and Maxim - who will study Economics at City University London - saw his name picked out of a hat to take the prize.
Maxim achieved two A* Grades in Business Studies and Economics plus three A Grades in Law, Politics and General Studies.
"This scheme wasn't just about people getting the best grades, but about them achieving the very best they could individually" Principal Nick Spenceley
He said: "I was flabbergasted when I was told it was me as I knew there were a lot of people in the running for it. Money was definitely a concern when I applied for uni although it didn't put me off because I always wanted to go. Now I know the first year will be fine."
Principal Nick Spenceley explained that the prize was all about offering students at the College an additional incentive to do the very best they could.
He said: "When I started here I really wanted to reinforce student attendance and competition. This scheme wasn't just about people getting the best grades, but about them achieving the very best they could individually.
"Maxim was just one of about 30 students who met the criteria, but it was him who was chosen randomly. Higher Education is an expensive business and hopefully this will help Maxim. It's very encouraging to see his effort rewarded."
In 2014-15 the College will be offering similar, smaller incentives to a wider number of students to enable more young people to benefit.
Seevic College offers the widest choice of A-Levels in South Essex. Students at the College achieved its best ever A-Level pass rate in Summer 2014.
Seevic College’s A-Level class of 2014 achieved:
- Best ever A2 pass rate – 98%
- Best ever AS results – well above the national average
- 100% pass rate on 38 AS and A2 courses
- Pass rates for all AS Science subjects above the national average
- A* - B Grades 10% above the national average in 12 subjects: AS English Language & Literature, AS Biology, AS Physics, AS French, AS Communication & Culture, AS Dance, AS Fine Art, AS & A2 Photography, AS & A2 Applied Science and A2 Geology.
It's not too late to apply for courses starting this September.
