Seevic College students brave the cold to support local homelessness

Tuesday, 04 March 2014

Daisy Baker and Holly Mead have raised almost £400Two brave Seevic College students recently slept rough for 12 hours overnight in Southend-on-Sea in order to support young people as risk of homelessness.

Holly Mead and Daisy Baker, both 18, were among 100 individuals who took part in the Southend YMCA Sleep Easy event on Saturday 1 March.

The event saw Holly and Daisy housed in a cardboard box and braving the elements for the evening to gain a glimpse of what it’s like to sleep on the streets.

The two students have so far raised £390 in sponsorship from the event, including £75 donated by the Seevic College Student Association

Holly and Daisy were inspired to take part in the Sleep Easy after making a documentary about local homelessness as part of their Media Production course at the College.

All funds raised from the Sleep Easy went towards developing Southend YMCA’s supported housing provision.

Speaking afterwards, Holly said: “Sleeping rough for the evening was scary and mentally draining but luckily we had each other to get us through it. I can’t imagine having to endure being alone each day on a regular basis - the experience helped us to be grateful and appreciative for everything that we have.”

Holly and Daisy found out about the Sleep Easy event through Southend YMCA Marketing & PR Officer Tom Moulton, a former Seevic College student who contributed towards their homelessness documentary.

Daisy added: “We’d like to thank Tom and the Southend YMCA for all their help with filming our documentary and also the College Student Association for their donation.”

Holly and Daisy both previously attended King John School in Thundersley and will complete their BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Media Production course at Seevic College in summer 2013.

Holly has been accepted by Plymouth College of Art to study BA (Hons) Fashion, Media & Marketing while Daisy has been accepted by Buckinghamshire New University to study BA (Hons) Music and Event Management.

Holly and Daisy are still accepting donations for the Sleep Easy appeal. To donate visit www.justgiving.com/thedarwinduo
