Lashes of fun at Beauty Academy taster event
Thursday, 14 February 2013
Twenty-five Year 10 and 11 students from across South Essex enjoyed a sneak-peak at careers in the beauty industry this week, at a taster event held at Seevic College’s Beauty Academy in Billericay.
The students, aged between 14 and 16, tried their hand at a series of introductory workshops including make-up, nails and eyebrow and eyelash extension.
The event took place over two and a half hours on Tuesday 12 February.
On the night the students who took part, from Sweyne Park School in Rayleigh and The Grays School in Thurrock, were also able to discover their future options for training and working in the thriving beauty therapy industry.
Jane Houghton is owner and manager of The Beauty Academy, which delivers Seevic College’s beauty therapy provision and hosted the event.
She said: “The event provided each of the students who took part with a real opportunity to see first-hand the kind of exciting vocational training opportunities that are open to them.
“It was a pleasure to see the girls really enjoying the workshops and I hope to see many of them again in the future.”
Seevic College works in partnership with The Beauty Skills Academy, located in Southend Road, Billericay, to offer school leavers the opportunity to gain NVQ Beauty Therapy qualifications in the academy's realistic working environment with an opportunity to develop reception and customer service skills in the working salon.
Courses run over 2-3 days a week and enable students to gain practical experience of working with customers while learning about a range of treatments including make-up, manicure and pedicure and eyebrow and eyelash enhancement.
The taster session was part of the Have a Go project, which enables young people to experience vocational activities that they otherwise might not have a chance to access.
Have a Go is funded by the European Social Fund, set up to improve employment opportunities in the European Union.
