What will I do?

The course has 2 units - The Role of the Teaching Assistant and Key Issues in Working in Schools, which covers a broad
range of subjects including:

  • Child development
  • The role of a teaching assistant and how to support colleagues
  • The importance of communication and play in development and learning
  • How to continually improve your practice and why

The first unit, The Role of the Teaching Assistant, looks at the relationship between national framework and local strategies and their affect on the teaching assistant’s role. It looks at the importance of monitoring
learning, implementing changes and developing your own reflective practice.

The Key Issues in Working in Schools unit looks at how to develop and promote positive behaviour, key legislation and the
procedures to keep children safe and how to identify and manage risks. In addition you will identify and develop the skills
required to be an effective member of the school team.

Entry requirements

Candidates should already be employed or working as a volunteer on a regular basis in a school environment with children between the ages of 0-16 years.

All candidates must be at least 16 years of age.

It is also recommended that your English Language skills are at GCSE Grade C or above.

Assessment

The course is assessed by the completion of two written assignments.

Progression

Successful completion of this course offers progression pathways to a Foundation Degree in Learning Support and the Sector Endorsed Foundation Degree in Early Years.
