Who is the course for?
If you oversee someone at work or lead a small team of people then this apprenticeship is right for you. Nearly all jobs mean you will be working with others and to ensure that teams work together towards the same goal, there is often a team leader in place.
If you are organised and enjoy taking the lead in situations then this may be the right qualification for you. Team leaders often have more responsibility than others but are also paid a higher salary. Good team leaders can progress into more senior management posts and it is a good starting point to develop your career.
What qualities do I need?
You should enjoy taking on extra responsibility and leading the way in situations. Also, problem solving and encouraging others to act or work in a particular way will be important skills.
A good communicator who is motivated and enjoys supporting others to achieve will also be useful.
What would I do?
A wide range of jobs include shift leaders, section leads or team leaders. This could be within a hotel, leisure centre, office or factory.
You are likely to be a key point of contact for your staff with other management and will need to oversee, monitor and support other peoples’ work.
What qualifications do I get?
You will achieve an NVQ 2 in Team Leading, Level 2 Award in Team Work, Functional Skills at Level 1 for Maths and Level 2 for English.
Entry requirements
A minimum of 2 grade Ds at GCSE to include at least English and Maths are preferred but not essential. Entry onto the course is subject to an interview and selection day.
Assessment
You will need to attend College for one day per week. Functional skills are assessed by an on line examination. The NVQ is assessed in the workplace through observation and Q&A. The technical certificate is assessed through both your workplace and assignment/portfolio work.
When does it start and how long is it for?
September
It usually takes up to 12 months to complete.
Employment
You may already be employed and if not, the College will support you with finding suitable employment. You will need to be working in paid employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week. Apprentices are paid a minimum of £95 per week by the employer (pro rata for part time work).
Once you have achieved your apprenticeship qualification you may be able to progress to an advanced apprenticeship in management and then onto a Foundation Degree. Starting salaries once qualified range from £14,000 to £20,000. More senior posts may attract salaries of up to £30,000.
