Who is the course for?
This course is for individuals who wish to work with customers in the leisure environment, providing high level customer service and pool safety as part of a team. The role may also include other jobs such as dealing with equipment or working on the centre reception.
What qualities do I need to do this course?
Pool lifeguards/recreation assistants need to be highly organised, enthusiastic, motivated and approachable. They must have excellent communication skills and work well in a team. Pool lifeguards/recreation assistants must have a good knowledge of the health and safety implications associated with the leisure environment.
What would I be doing as a Lifeguard?
Lifeguards ensure swimmers are safe in pools. They help prevent accidents by being alert to any potentially dangerous situations. They patrol the pool, give general first aid and in emergencies use life saving techniques such as resuscitation.
Other tasks include checking the water temperature and chemical balance, setting up equipment and advising swimmers on the use of a diving board. In some leisure pools they also manage the slides and flumes.
Recreation assistants are responsible for the cleanliness of the building and undertake regular checks to ensure that standards of safety, environmental control and hygiene are maintained during opening hours. Recreation assistants also put up and take down equipment not in permanent use.
What qualifications will I get?
You will achieve a Level 2 NVQ in Operational Services, Level 2 National Pool Lifeguard Q ualification, Level 2 Certificate in
Industrial Organisational Awareness and Functional Skills at Level 1 in Maths and English.
When does it start and how long is it for?
You can start the Apprenticeship in September. It usually takes up to 12 months to complete.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 2 grade Ds at GCSE, of which one must be English, are preferred but not essential. Entry onto the course is subject to an interview and selection day.
Assessment
You will need to attend College for one day per week.
Functional skills are assessed by an online examination. The NVQ is assessed in the workplace through observation and Q&A. The technical certificate is assessed through both your workplace and assignment/portfolio work.
Employment
You may already be employed but if not, the College will support you with finding suitable employment. Y ou will need to be working in paid employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week. Apprentices are paid a minimum of £95 per week by the employer (pro rata for part time work).
Once you have achieved your apprenticeship qualification you can progress to an advanced apprenticeship.
Starting salaries once qualified range from £12,500 to £15,500. More senior posts may attract salaries of up to £35,000.
