Who is the course for?
This course is aimed at individuals who have a desire to work closely with customers in the gym i.e. Exercise & Fitness sector. Fitness Instructors may work with adults, children and people with disabilities and may perform jobs such as inductions, developing fitness programmes with clients, health and safety checks and cleaning.
What qualities do I need to do this course?
Fitness Instructors need to be enthusiastic, motivated and approachable. They must have excellent communication skills and a desire to support individuals and groups in their development of fitness through safe and effective exercise.
Fitness instructors must have a good knowledge of the health and safety implications associated with the gym environment.
What would I be doing as a Gym Instructor?
Fitness instructors work with groups and individuals in gyms, health and fitness centres and leisure centres. They supervise customers using the facility and ensure that they are exercising safely and effectively. They may conduct group exercise classes such as circuit training, aerobics or spinning.
What qualifications will I get?
You will achieve a Level 2 NVQ in Exercise & Fitness, Level 2 CYQ Y MCA Certificate in Fitness Instructing, Level 2 Certificate in Industrial Organisational Awareness and Functional Skills at Level 1 in Maths and English.
When does it start and how long is it for?
You can start the Apprenticeship in September. It usually takes up to 12 months to complete.
Entry requirements
A minimum of 2 grade Ds at GCSE, of which one must be English, are preferred but not essential. Entry onto the course is subject to an interview and selection day.
Assessment
You will need to attend College for one day per week.
Functional skills are assessed by an online examination. The NVQ is assessed in the workplace through observation and Q&A. The technical certificate is assessed through both your workplace and assignment/portfolio work.
Employment
You may already be employed but if not, the College will support you with finding suitable employment. Y ou will need to be working in paid employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week. Apprentices are paid a minimum of £95 per week by the employer (pro rata for part time work).
Once you have achieved your apprenticeship qualification you can progress to an advanced apprenticeship.
Starting salaries once qualified range from £10,000 to £15,000. More senior posts, for example an experienced Personal Trainer may attract salaries of up to £20,000 to £30,000.
