Who is the course for?

You may be interested in pursuing a career as an accountant or in finance. Apprentices are likely to be working as an account assistant, credit control clerk or general financial assistant.

All industries and employers will need people to monitor and manage their finances and organisations can vary from small businesses with a few employees to multi national global corporations. It is this variety of industries that make working in finance an interesting and exciting career.

What qualities do I need?

You will need to be good working with numbers and have natural business and commercial acumen. Good communication skills and attention to detail are also important. It is likely that information you will be dealing with will be sensitive and confidential therefore you should be trustworthy and honest.

What would I do?

You are likely to be learning how to balance accounts, process invoices and payments, prepare financial returns, monitor petty cash and bills and write summary financial reports.

If you work in a small business you are likely to be doing a bit of everything! Larger organisations will have specialist teams focusing on different aspects of accounting.

What qualifications do I get with an apprenticeship?

You will achieve the NVQ level 2 accounting qualification as well as functional skills including level 1 maths and level 2 English.

What qualifications do I get with an advanced apprenticeship?

You will achieve a level 3 NVQ in Accounting and functional skills including level 2 maths and level 2 English.

When does the apprenticeship start and how long is it for?

The apprenticeship (level 2)

It usually takes up to 12 months to complete.

The advanced apprenticeship (level 3)

Entry requirements

The apprenticeship
A minimum of 2 grade Ds at GCSE of which one must be maths, are preferred but not essential. Entry onto the course is subject to an interview and selection day.

The advanced apprenticeship
You will need to demonstrate at least one of the following:

  • A suitable level of competence within a relevant job
  • Have successfully completed the apprenticeship
  • Have a minimum of 5 G.C.S.E’s at grade C

Assessment

You will need to attend College for one day per week. Functional skills are assessed by an on line examination. The NVQ is assessed in the workplace through observation and Q&A. The technical certificate is assessed through both your workplace and assignment/portfolio work.

Employment

You may already be employed and if not, the College will support you with finding suitable employment. You will need to be working in paid employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week. Apprentices are paid a minimum of £95 per week by the employer (pro rata for part time work).

Once you have achieved your apprenticeship qualification you can progress to an advanced apprenticeship and onto professional qualifications or a Foundation Degree at a future point. Starting salaries once qualified range from £12,000 to £14,000 with the potential once further experience and qualifications have been gained, to earn up to £40,000 per year.
