Young Apprentice Alfie to represent England at Karate Championships
Seevic Young Apprentice, Alfie Ambrose, has been selected to represent England at the forthcoming Karate European Junior and Cadet Championships, held in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The Karate Championships take place from 11th to 13th February and Serbia will be hosting the event to over 40 European countries. Alfie is one of four representing England at the European Junior and Cadet Championships. He will be travelling to Serbia on 9th February with his squad, and will also have his parents there as spectators.
Competition is fierce but Alfie is no stranger to fighting at championships both abroad and in the UK. In 2009 Alfie was selected to participate in the Style Championships held in Cyprus and won a bronze medal. He has also won a medal for the British Championships held in 2010 and a trophy for the UK Open Championships in 2007.
Alfie, 16, from Hadleigh, said, “It is overwhelming to know that I am representing my country. This is the biggest competition I’ve been selected for and I know it is going to be tough but I can’t wait to get a new experience and travel to a new country, and hopefully come away with another medal.”
Alfie has been learning Karate for 8 years and has been training as part of the England Squad for just over a year. Training with England means that Alfie has regular training sessions all over the country, including twice a week in Birmingham, twice a week in Barking and once a week in North London, as well as training at his local squad in Benfleet.
As a Young Apprentice at Seevic College, Alfie is given plenty of support and flexibility to develop his karate as well as gaining extra qualifications. He does work experience at Seevic’s gym, Zones, and hopes that his studies and work experience will create the stepping-stones for a future career as a Karate Instructor and Personal Fitness Trainer.
Julie Clark, Seevic College’s Young Apprentice Co-ordinator, is proud of Alfie’s achievement. She said, “Alfie is an excellent student and he is very popular with all the teachers and his peers. Alfie does really well to keep on top of all his studies here at Seevic and participate in his work experience at Zones Gym. We are all very proud of Alfie and wish him every success for the championships in February.”
