Seevic College students recently organised events all in the name of local and national charities, for their annual Charities Week.

Events included a grueling sponsored leg waxing challenge, St Patrick’s Day cake sales and a very unusual activity that involved members of the Students’ Association walking around the College putting on as many clothes as they could find… strange, but an effective way to raise money!

Total money raised from the week’s charitable activities was £730.

Kayla Philpot, Media and Communications Officer of Seevic’s Student Association, said, “It was a great fun-filled week that brought the College together to give to those more in need.”

Fraser Johns, Student Association Senior Officer, found the week rewarding, stating, “Charities Week was a great success and I, with the rest of the student executive committee, had a lot of fun planning it with everyone, getting involved to donate and join in on the fun activities.”

In the lead up to Charity Week, students participated in tutorial activities which highlighted the importance of charitable giving, where they were asked to nominate a local and National charity that they would like the College to support. During Charities Week they could then vote online for which of the nominated charities would receive funds and how much.

The money raised will be divided between the students’ nominated charities according to the percentage of the vote they received. Charities who will receive a donation from the students at Seevic College include:

Little Havens, Save The Children (Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Appeal), Cancer Research UK, Red Nose Day, Help for Heroes, Great Ormond Street, The Southend Toy Library and Lucy’s Wheelchair Appeal.

There was also a food collection throughout the week, in support of Southend Homeless Action Resource Project (HARP) and Homeless Centre.
