Students show a Passion for Fashion
Students make 'something from nothing'
SEEVIC College students showcased their talents by putting on a unique fashion show for their friends and family. Textiles, Art & Design and Media students all worked extremely hard to take their creations from classroom to catwalk and made the show a huge success.
Textiles students Sayuri Standing, 17, from Rayleigh said: “I have made 2 dresses, a corset and a headscarf all based on the theme of Arabic culture. It’s been a lot of hard work, but it will be exciting to see the clothes that I made being modeled on the catwalk. I am modeling the corset myself so I’m a bit nervous because I’m worried about falling over!”
Textiles students designed and created innovative costumes to fit with the themes of ‘The Water Collection’, ‘Recycling’, ‘White Winter’ and ‘Something from Nothing’. Media and Art and Design students provided graphics, posters, lighting and music to give the show a very professional feel.
Show Organiser, Katrina Parris, Head of Art and Textiles said: “The textiles students have worked very hard to complete their coursework assignments and the fashion show has been a showcase for their efforts. They have enjoyed seeing the process develop from designing to making and finally modeling the finished item.
“The fashion show brought together skills and interests from a range of courses and as a live project gave professional work experience to all involved.”
A range of activities carried out by the students inspired the different style collections. ‘The Water Collection’ was based on drawings and photographs taken at the poolside of Runnymede swimming pool while all of the ‘White Winter’ garments were made from shower curtains.
Another creative theme was ‘Recycling’ which gave the students opportunities to experiment with unconventional materials for the design and production of their outfits. These materials included old CD’s sweet and crisp wrappers, magazines and newspapers, plastic bags and recycled garments.
The theme of ‘Something from Nothing’ saw the customising of old bomber jackets, decorator’s overalls, England flags and other unfashionable garments. The students reinvented these items as fashion pieces usig processes and techniques including fabric painting, spraying, appliqué and hand stitching.
