Seevic College celebrates students’ sporting talent at Britain’s biggest charity sports day
Students from Seevic College have been showcasing their sporting skills to raise money for charity as part of Britain’s biggest sports day fundraising event, held yesterday. The event was part of a nationwide initiative in which Colleges organised their own sports days to raise money for charity as part of Colleges Week 2010.
Seevic College Principal and Chief Executive, Sarah Wright, said: “The theme of Sporting Talent really plays to one of Seevic’s key strengths. We are proud to be able to showcase the work of our fantastic staff and students during this special week.”
The Mayor, Councillor David Cross attended the event and was given the opportunity to see Seevic’s quality sporting facilities and meet with some of their ‘Sporting heroes’.
He said: “The sport offered at Seevic College is second to none. I’m very impressed at the hunger of these young sporting talents. They need that hunger, it stands them in good stead for their future. Sport teaches young adults self-discipline, team spirit and focus.”
The chosen charity for yesterday’s event was The Essex Disabled Sports Foundation, who provide sporting facilities and opportunities for disabled children throughout Essex. Seevic students took part in a range of sports throughout the day to help raise money, including trampolining, self-defence classes and a National League basketball game which Seevic College went on to win.
Craig Davidson, Curriculum Area Leader of Sport, said: “The students are proud of what Seevic does, and are more than happy to demonstrate and talk about what competitive sport has taught them. They understand that they are privileged by studying and playing sport at Seevic College because we have such a vast range of facilities and excellent teaching on offer. Sport can be a very powerful route to learning, so we are delighted that so many students took part and raised money for such an important local cause.”
