Essential Skills students get involved in Local Democracy Week

Essential Skills students at Seevic College got involved in the Local Democracy Week by taking part in a democracy workshop at Castle Point Council’s offices. The workshop aimed to make students aware that we all have a voice, are able to make choices, and vote to show our support towards issues in that affect young people in our community.

The day was opened by the Castle Point Mayor, David Cross, who started proceedings, presenting the students with a talk about his role within the community infrastructure. He also took questions from Seevic students and allowed them to try on his robe!

Students were also given the opportunity to participate in a mock election, voting for celebrities that were represented by Student Candidates for each electoral party. The process was treated exactly as it would be in a real Government election, with each student using a polling both.

Janet Perry, Essential Skills tutor, said, “The voting was really good experience as most of the students had never voted before and they enjoyed their peers representing celebrities. It was a fun activity and a very worthwhile day for all the students”.

To close the day, students were given the opportunity to feedback to councillors and staff about what they would like to see provided in the local community.

Essential Skills student, Jack Venturini, enjoyed his experience at Castle Point Council’s offices. He said, “I learnt some interesting things and it was good putting forward ideas that we would like to see in the community”.
