Essential Skills students take part in mock election

Mock Ballott Paper

Students inspired to vote

With the forthcoming Government elections, SEEVIC College worked with Castle Point Borough Council to set up a mock polling station for Essential Skills Students. The students, who all have learning difficulties and/or disabilities, got to see how the voting process works by visiting the Castle Point Council Offices.

Student taking a mock vote

More than 50 students met assistant deputy returning officers Ann Horgan and John Riley in the Council Chamber. After a short presentation giving an overview of politics, the voting process and a breakdown of local Government, the students took part in a mock election complete with polling booth and ballot box.

Essential skills student Phillip Burrill said: "I've learnt a lot today and have really enjoyed the day. When I am old enough to start voting this has inspired me to get involved."

There was a tie between two candidates so the “straw poll” technique, where candidates draw straws for an extra vote, had to be used.

John Riley said: “It was a very useful session both for the students and us, not only did those who will be voting for the first time get a chance to see how it all works, but they asked some very thought-provoking questions on politics and voting.”

Essential Skills student Vicky Palfrey said: "I have enjoyed the day and learnt a lot. It was interesting listening to the morning session and I enjoyed going up to vote. It made me feel important.”

Essential Skills Tutor, Janet pery said: “The students learnt how to vote, why we need to vote and why their votes are important. Polling officers organised an excellent presentation giving the students an overview of the voting system. They set up a mock polling station where students voted for a celebrity under a party heading. The aim of the session was experience the voting procedure. Hopefully this activity has given the students the confidence to vote in this year’s election.”
