Engineering students create innovative project pieces

High hopes for Kayak and Go-Cart projects

BTEC Engineering students have worked extremely hard to create inventive and original pieces for their final design & technology project. Designs include an off road motorised go-cart, a modified kayak and a BMW display water feature.

Kayak and Go-Cart created by Engineering students

Luke Lazell has been working on his kayak project since Christmas, he said: “I am member of the Upriver Sailing Club and they kindly donated a kayak for me to use on this project. I started by modifying the kayak and putting an engine from a jet ski at the back. I painted it black, moved the seat forward and have put more buoyancy at the back. I also plan to paint a shark face on the front! I will be testing it on the River Crouch in Hullbridge, so hopefully it will work and I will have my own kayak.”

Another project, which has caught the eye of other students, is an off road motorised go-cart created by James Scogings. James said: “I started this project in November after getting the idea off of the Internet. I have made the whole go-cart by myself, including the chassis. I welded different pieces of metal together, used a seat from an old Rover car and added an engine to create it.

It should be completely finished soon and I can’t wait to test it. It's been a challenging project but I’m pleased with the work I have done and I'm hoping that this will get me into university to study Mechanical engineering at Coventry."
