Hard-hitting real-life stories aim to shock

SEEVIC College students received a visit from members of the Essex Fire & Rescue Service to talk to them about accident prevention and road safety. The students were faced with hard-hitting real-life stories and videos of car accidents, aimed to shock them into driving more carefully, especially in the run up to Christmas.

Sub Officer Reece Lovell from the Essex Fire & Rescue Service said: “Every single day on Essex roads, we have to rescue at least one person who needs to be cut out of their car, we need to drive this down. Today we are working with the Essex Casualty Reduction Board and our aim is to get to as many 16-25 year olds, to impart knowledge of driving attitudes and the consequences of reckless driving.”

The students were shown two short documentary style videos including one about a real accident that happened on an Essex road, caused by the driver speeding. Sub Officer Reece Lovell explained that the driver of the speeding car was very lucky to survive the accident and students were shown photographs of his horrific injuries.

Katy Stone, 17, from Hadleigh said: “The visit today was really good and very eye-opening, it will definitely change the way that I drive. It shows how easily you can be distracted when you are driving. The video at the end, with the girl that caused a major crash because she was texting on her phone, was very realistic and it was scary to see how quickly it can all happen.”
