SEEVIC wins a gold award for healthy eating

SEEVIC College has been awarded a ‘Gold Healthy Eating Award’ by Castle Point Borough Council for the healthy food choices available to staff and students in the College restaurant, as well as having a good standard of food hygiene. Castle Point Mayor Cliff Brunt presented the award on behalf of the Council’s Environmental Health Department who are running a scheme to raise awareness of healthy eating in the area.

To win the award the College catering department had to complete an initial self-assessment questionnaire, to ensure that the food standards met the specific requirements. A representative from Harlow District Council was then sent to assess the College’s catering facilities.

Public Health Officer, Adam Sherwood, from the Environmental Health services, visited the College to audit the site against set criteria. He said: “The College have gained a Gold Healthy Life Eating Award by meeting all of the standards set. The basis of the award is keeping fats, in particular saturated fats, salt and sugar to a minimum.

“During my visit I examined the products and cooking methods of meals at the College, to ensure healthy cooking practices are used wherever applicable.
The key to this award is offering 50% healthy options and making them visible within the College menu. The cooking practices at SEEVIC College are of a high enough standard to gain the gold award.”

Catering Manager Angie Hobbs said: “The Catering Team are very proud to achieve this Gold Healthy Eating Award. We are committed to providing a high quality service, using the best, fresh raw ingredients and working closely with trusted, approved suppliers to strive for improved quality. It is excellent for this work to be recognised.

The college recognises the importance of getting everyone involved with the benefits of eating a balanced diet and leading a healthy lifestyle. We continue to offer healthy food choices and provide information towards a balanced diet.”

SEEVIC College is very glad to have won the Award and hopes to raise awareness of the importance of a balanced and healthy diet to its staff and students. The College has a wide range of Catering Facilities on Campus, which offer a wide variety of foods. The menu is changed on a weekly basis to give staff and students the chance to try new and exciting recipes.
