Colleges Week
Seevic College is proud to take part in the Colleges Week celebrations.
About Colleges Week
Colleges Week is taking place from 8–14 November to celebrate the role colleges play in unlocking talent in communities and transforming the lives of learners. Seevic College will be hosting events including visits by local stakeholders.
Colleges Week is in its third year and it is the education sector’s major showcase for the vital role that Colleges play in providing people of all ages and businesses in the UK with the opportunities they need to succeed. This year, Colleges Week is all about helping students make informed decisions about which route to further education is right for them, under the banner Your Future, your choice. The week’s activities will celebrate the diversity of College activity in a variety of ways, from sporting fundraisers, to social networking competitions to media launches and business events.
By getting involved in these initiatives, Colleges around the country will have an excellent opportunity to publicise the benefits of College life to prospective and existing students, as well as to reach out to the wider public such as parents, businesses and community groups.
Colleges are vital to building Britain's future, helping people improve their job prospects by getting the right qualifications or re-training, and helping businesses invest in their workforces to stay ahead of the competition.
Craig is currently studying for a BSc Coaching Science with Physical Education following on from studying a Sport & Exercise Science BTEC at Seevic College. He has coaching qualifications in Tennis (Level 3) and Badminton (Level 2) as well as a qualification in teaching ‘Bikeability’, the proficiency test for children to learn the skills and confidence to cycle on today’s roads. He is also a qualified Lifeguard.
"The transition from BTEC to degree level was certainly easier having done it at the same campus. The teachers already knew me and my capabilities, so were able to support my development.
"Studying at Seevic has allowed me to stay living at home with my family and keep my costs down. My friends come back from University now with massive debts. I’ve also been able to coach in a partner school, Deanes Secondary School, and local primary schools around the area.
"Studying at Seevic allows me to work more. Particularly because of the type of work I do, the demand for my hours is mainly just before and after school hours. If I was studying away from home then I would have to use this time to travel to and from university instead.
"Seevic is close to home so if i need to come in to do research I do not have to travel too far to get here. Anglia Ruskin have fantastic resources that can be used from Seevic. The Cambridge campus are able to send journals and papers that aren’t documented online to Essex instead of having to travel to Cambridge to access them. This is so much more convenient and saves me both time and travel costs.
"My favourite part of my degree course has been the Long-Term Athletic Development unit, as it ties in with my Tennis coaching. It’s about children learning certain aspects of sports techniques at different ages which has helped me to apply this when I coach.
"I want to work within education and Seevic has allowed me to carry along this career path. I’m not sure whether I would like to teach primary school level or secondary yet, but if I decide to teach secondary I can do a GTP - a Graduate Teacher Practice, as this is a practical qualification, learning on the job.
"Going to college to study Higher Education has left me with more options when I graduate. Instead of returning home with a large amount of debt, I will have more money to spare to buy a car or get a flat with the money i would’ve been spending on University living costs. It has also allowed me to create more options for myself by creating links within the local community that I can use to my advantage and keep up my part-time coaching.
"Playing for the American Football team has been my most enjoyable experience alongside studying my degree. As the Anglia Ruskin degree is split across two campuses at Seevic and in Cambridge, we alternate training sessions between the two sites to make it fair for all players. There is always a minibus to get us to training. This also allows us to travel to other universities in our conference such as Portsmouth. I’m hoping to keep playing American Football for Essex after I leave University. Anglia Ruskin acts as a feeder to the Essex American Football squad so I have been able to represent the county through the links that Anglia Ruskin have."
Rebecca Harris MP met with some Seevic apprentices and two of their employers, Project Skills Solutions and Party Man World. She was interested to find out about the experiences of both the individual apprentices and their employers to see what the partnership offers.
Rebecca said: "I am particularly interested in apprenticeships and business enterprises. Apprenticeships are a win-win situation for both the young person and the business involved. I urge young people and employers to look into this, especially in current times. It’s aiding businesses to grow using local apprentices."

Project Skills Solutions, founded in 2004, are a very focused company which offers unique training courses to meet the specific needs of their clients. They provide cabling solutions and they also offer re-settlement programmes to the HM Armed Forces. Peter Ely, CEO of Project Skills Solutions, pictured above, will be speaking at our Training for Business Growth on Thursday about the benefits of employing Seevic apprentices.
Graeme Matthews, representative of Party Man World, talked to Rebecca about his experiences of working with Seevic apprentice Nikkita. With over 12,000 sq ft of fun, adventures and happiness, Partyman World Of Play Basildon is where it all started, allowing familes of all ages, sizes and varieties to be able to share the dream! With play structures, the UK's ONLY climbable volcano, toddler area, and 4 fantastic party rooms, there's loads to do for the kids!
